Proactive Appointment Policy
Proactive Appointment Policy at FAU
FAU is particularly keen to ensure that gender mainstreaming is taken into consideration during appointments procedures. The following measures have been implemented so far:
Regulations for Appointments
The regulations ‚Quality assurance in appointment procedures under particular consideration of aspects of gender and diversity‚ (German only) are referred to every time appointments are made, and are constantly being updated. They are used for quality assurance and controlling purposes in all appointment procedures. Equal opportunities are improved by consistently, systematically and transparently integrating equality and diversity aspects in the appointment procedure.
Other relevant documents are:
Another key aspect of FAU’s appointment procedure is taking a proactive headhunting approach for recruiting female professors. In addition to the Regulations for Appointments, binding ‚Guidelines for Headhunting Female Professors‚ (German only) have also been approved. These give women’s representatives more influence. According to the guidelines, women’s representatives have the right to select qualified female candidates from the applications that have been received and request that they are invited to give a trial lecture. The homepage of the Office of Equality and Diversity provides a list of databases of female researchers that can be used to help choose suitable female candidates.
Women's representatives in appointment procedures
As full members of the appointments committees, women’s representatives have an important role to play. Training courses on appointment procedures taking all aspects of gender equality into account are offered regularly for all women’s representatives. In addition, the Office of Equality and Diversity has prepared a handout for women’s representatives in appointment committees (German only).

Online-Tutorial „Gendersensible Berufungsverfahren und Personalauswahl“
An approx. one-hour StudOn-based online tutorial aims to raise awareness of (unconscious) gender biases and their influence on personnel decisions. The course is primarily aimed at members of appointment committees and managers at FAU. However, it can also be used by all FAU internal and external interested parties. Further information and access can be found here (German version only).
