Visiting Scholarship (Faculty of Sciences)
Aim of the funding
The scholarships are awarded to female scientists at FAU with above-average performance who are planning a research stay abroad and are completing their doctorate at FAU’s Faculty of Natural Sciences, or are in the postdoc or habilitation phase. The scholarships also support young female scientists from abroad with above-average performance who are planning a research stay at FAU and are in a comparable qualification phase.
Funding can only be provided subject to the availability of funds.
Funding is provided to women who are pursuing an academic career, preferably with the goal of a professorship.
Scholarships for female doctoral students
Scholarships can be awarded preferentially for the final phase of a doctorate in the case of above-average performance. The prerequisite for this is demonstrable preliminary work. Only scientific doctorates that serve as the basis for further qualification for a professorship at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg can be funded.
Only female doctoral candidates who are also registered in the FAU doctoral database docDaten and admitted to doctoral studies at FAU can apply.
The scholarship amount is 1,200 euros per month (plus childcare allowance, if applicable).
Additional material and travel expenses (including printing costs) are not available.
The duration of the scholarship is between 1 and a maximum of 4 months. An extension is not possible.
Applicants must submit the following documents in addition to the completed application form:
- A (tabular) curriculum vitae with list of publications (see application form)
- Expert opinion with original signature (see checklist)
- A short project description explaining the work already done for the dissertation and a precise work program in terms of content and time for the requested funding period (approx. 3 pages incl. work plan),
- Classification of the project in the career planning,
- Copies of the children’s birth certificates, if applicable.
Applications for funding in German or English must be submitted digitally.
Scholarships for female postdocs
This funding is intended to enable women with a doctorate to start, continue and/or complete a project that qualifies them for a university career (junior professorship or habilitation). As a rule, female applicants should have completed their doctorate with a grade of at least „very good“ (magna cum laude). In addition, the duration of the doctorate must not have exceeded 4 years as a rule. The doctoral certificate must be available at the start of the scholarship.
The scholarship amount is 2,200 euros per month (plus childcare allowance, if applicable). Additional material and travel expenses (including printing costs) are not available.
The duration of the scholarship is between 1 and a maximum of 4 months. An extension is not possible.
A close institutional connection of the scholarship holder to FAU is required.
Applicants must submit the following documents in addition to the completed application form:
- A (tabular) curriculum vitae with a list of publications (see application form),
- A statement by the department/institute to which the project is assigned on the close institutional ties of the scholarship holder,
- A brief description of the project, explaining the preliminary work already done and including a precise work program for the requested funding period in terms of content and time (approx. 3 pages incl. work plan),
- Classification of the project in the career planning,
- Copies of the children’s birth certificates.

Scholarships for female habilitants
Funding is available for young female scientists who are pursuing a habilitation according to the new law in accordance with Art. 65 of the Bavarian University Law (BayHSchG) in the version of May 23, 2006 and for young female scientists who have completed their habilitation no longer than 1 year or are in the initial phase of their junior professorship.
The scholarship amount is 2,600 euros per month (plus childcare allowance, if applicable). Additional material and travel expenses (including printing costs) are not available.
The duration of the scholarship is between 1 and a maximum of 4 months. An extension is not possible.
A close institutional connection of the scholarship holder to FAU is required.
Applicants must submit the following documents in addition to the completed application form:

Application deadline
March 31, 2022
Pre-selection interview
Participation in a pre-selection interview is required.
If you are seriously interested, please arrange an interview with the Women’s Representative of the Faculty (Prof. Dr. Götz-Neunhoeffer) no later than two weeks before the application deadline.
Expert opinion
The applications of the female doctoral candidates have to be accompanied by an expert opinion of the supervisor.
